Job Search Strategies

When it’s time to look for new employment, either because it’s forced upon you or you have decided that it’s time to explore options, you need a game plan. There are a lot of resources to tap into, including specialized job search sites and advice on the internet, government career centers, newspapers, magazines, books, outplacement services, and personal/professional networking. Use these to your advantage.

Looking for employment requires a commitment to devise a plan and adhere to it. Are you going to send out two resumes per day? Make five calls per week? The more hits you make, the more likely you are to find a job that meets your requirements. It is helpful to search out a group of fellow job seekers, for a mutual supportive cohort can make each person more accountable for staying focused and on plan. A job group is also an excellent source of leads and tips.

Individuals who have not recently searched for a job are often surprised by the process and have numerous questions. When to follow-up on a letter or e-mailed application (not the next day), who to include for a reference, and how to respond to ads stating that applications will not be considered unless a salary history is included are queries we often answer. We also instruct clients how to upload resumes onto job search sites or the careers section of a company’s website.
